School leaders should be positive, warm and approachable.

They should also be

  • able to connect and engage with people from diverse backgrounds

  • an excellent listener

  • forever calm, consistent and issue-based.

They need conviction, courage, empathy, excellent manners and a strong appreciation for the absurd.

School leaders need exemplary leadership, administrative and management skills, and to be reflective about their practice.

They should also be able to

  • challenge mediocrity from a sound research basis

  • use a knowledge of human behaviour and its causes

  • assert professional authority in educational matters.

Above all, a school leader must be determined, resilient and persistent.
